The filters are a precious resource — a half-used filter can be traded for supplies, while a full one might buy a handful of military grade ammunition, which is the main currency in the tunnels. Lenses fog from your breath in the cold, and a single crack from combat can turn a routine scavenge into a panicked sprint back to the tunnels. The game's overall tone captures a grim and melancholic feeling, displaying the miserable lives of people who have survived the great war, and the gas mask is a constant reminder of that harsh reality.

In Their Own Story

Artyom, the silent protagonist, must wear a gas mask to explore areas covered in nuclear radiation, both underground and on the surface. In the game, the player encounters human and mutant enemies, and the gas mask can be damaged in combat, which forces the player to find a replacement. The player's survival also depends on constantly replacing their air filter, which they can monitor by inspecting Artyom's wristwatch. During the journey, Artyom and Bourbon pass through the surface of Moscow itself, where the air is irradiated and a gas mask is required. Later, Artyom travels alone through the surface, reuniting with Ulman who takes him to meet Miller. The gas mask is a constant companion, its condition and filter duration a ticking clock that forces careful planning for every surface excursion.

The gas mask is your primary defense against the irradiated atmosphere of the surface and certain contaminated tunnels in the Metro. It is automatically equipped when you step into hazardous areas. The mask's glass can crack from damage or pressure, reducing visibility and protection. Filters have a limited lifespan, shown by a timer on Artyom's wristwatch; when a filter runs out, you must quickly replace it from your inventory or risk suffocation. Finding spare filters is a constant priority, as the player often has little ammunition and must scavenge for supplies from caches or dead bodies. The mask can also be damaged by enemy attacks or environmental hazards, requiring repair or replacement.
