Red Faction
Exiled to the red world, they tore the corporation's foundations out of the rock.
The Red Faction is the titular resistance group at the heart of the Red Faction video game franchise, developed by Volition, Inc. and published by THQ. Set on Mars, the faction is composed of exiled humans who have turned to guerrilla warfare against the Helios Corporation, the powerful entity that controls the planet's resources and governs its colonial population through fear and economic coercion.

Lore & Background
The Red Faction was born of dispossession. In the franchise's shared setting, humanity has established a colony on Mars, but the Helios Corporation has consolidated control over the planet's mineral wealth, water reclamation, and political infrastructure. Those who dissent, who are deemed surplus, or who simply cannot pay the Helios tax are exiled to the harsher outer settlements, stripped of citizenship and left to survive in the dust and the tunnels. From that shared wound the Red Faction coalesced: a loose coalition of miners, former Helios workers, engineers, and soldiers who share one conviction—that the colony belongs to those who live on it, not to a board of directors orbiting Earth. Their tactics are those of guerrillas: hit-and-fade raids on Helios supply convoys, sabotage of processing plants, and the mining of tunnels that bypass corporate checkpoints. In Red Faction: Guerrilla, the faction's signature "Rage" ability lets a single operative trigger cascading structural collapses, turning Helios's own architecture—its towers, bridges, and fortifications—into weapons. The corporation responds with drone swarms, armed enforcers, and orbital bombardment, but the Red Faction's home ground is the planet itself, and the ground can be broken. The faction is not monolithic. Factions within the Red Faction disagree on strategy: some favor outright revolution and the total toppling of Helios, while others seek negotiated autonomy or targeted economic sabotage. What unites them is the red armband, the shared exile, and the refusal to accept that a corporation owns the sky they breathe.
In Their Own Story
The tunnel was three kilometres deep and the air tasted of rust. Kael pressed his back against the raw basalt wall and counted the seconds between the Helios patrol drones' rotor-blur overhead. Six. Seven. Eight. The red armband on his forearm had faded to a dull maroon after a year of Martian dust, but he still touched it the way a soldier touches a unit patch—confirmation that he was not alone down here, that somewhere in the dark there were others who remembered what it was to be cast out. Above, the Helios processing plant hummed its endless industrial hymn, drawing ore from the planet's bones and shipping it to refineries that would never see the red sky. Kael set the shaped charge on the load-bearing strut of the eastern gantry. The Rage was not a superpower; it was physics, patience, and the knowledge that Helios had built its towers on the same ground the exiled had bled to mine. When the charge went off, the gantry would fold, the conveyor would shear, and for one bright, shrieking moment the plant would be just rock and metal falling where it belonged. He sealed the charge, wiped the dust from his goggles, and began the long walk back through the dark. Above him, Mars turned its slow, rust-coloured face toward a distant sun, indifferent to who owned it.
Reader's Guide
The Red Faction is a grassroots resistance operating across the Martian colony, united by opposition to Helios Corporation's monopolistic control of resources and governance. Their ideology blends libertarian self-determination with working-class solidarity: the planet was settled by people, and no off-world board of directors should dictate who eats, who breathes recycled air, and who is exiled to the outer settlements. Territorially, the Red Faction controls the deep tunnel networks, abandoned mining shafts, and outer-ring settlements that Helios has deemed economically unviable. These underground warrens serve as command posts, armories, and safe houses. In Red Faction: Guerrilla, key controlled areas include the mining districts, the outer colony perimeter, and the sub-level infrastructure that underpins Helios's surface operations. The faction does not hold a single capital; its strength is distributed and mobile. Key members vary by title. In Red Faction: Guerrilla, the protagonist Alec Mason rises through the ranks as a Rage-capable operative. Leadership is collective and operational rather than hierarchical, with different cells handling sabotage, intelligence, and direct assault. The faction's sole major rivalry is with the Helios Corporation and its armed enforcer forces. There is no meaningful ally on the surface; the Red Faction's only "alliance" is the broader population of exiled colonists who provide intelligence, supplies, and recruits. In the central conflict of each game, the Red Faction's role is to escalate from targeted sabotage to full-scale assault, ultimately threatening Helios's infrastructure and command structure on Mars.
