Lore & Background
Ulman is a Ranger of the Spartan Order, an elite peacekeeping force based in Polis, the capital of the Metro. He first appears when Artyom is captured by the neo-Nazi Fourth Reich and about to be executed. Ulman, alongside fellow Ranger Pavel, rescues Artyom from execution. Pavel eventually dies escorting Artyom out of Reich territory, but Artyom later reunites with Ulman on the surface. Ulman then takes Artyom to meet Miller, the colonel of the Rangers in Polis. After the Polis governing council refuses to help Exhibition, Miller tells Artyom about a missile silo known as D6 that could destroy the Dark Ones' hive. To find a way to D6, Miller tells Artyom to meet him at the Moscow State Library to search for a map. Ulman accompanies Artyom and Miller to the library, helping them retrieve the map and flee from mutants. He is later part of the operation to locate and reactivate the D6 command center, and after their success, Artyom and Miller climb Ostankino Tower to install a laser guidance system. Ulman's role is that of a reliable, experienced fighter who prioritizes the mission and the safety of his comrades.
In Their Own Story
The tunnel shuddered as a distant explosion echoed from the depths. Ulman adjusted his gas mask, the filter hissing with each breath. 'Keep moving,' he said, his voice flat through the speaker. 'The library won't wait, and neither will the things that hunt here.' Artyom nodded, gripping his rifle tighter. Ahead, a faint light flickered—a broken lantern swinging in the stale air. Ulman raised a hand, signaling a halt. 'Wait. Listen.' The silence stretched, broken only by the drip of water and the skitter of claws on stone. Then, a low growl, the sound of something hungry and patient. 'Contact,' Ulman whispered, and raised his weapon—not with haste, but with the practiced calm of a man who has done this a thousand times before.
