The Guide
A haggard voice in the black, offering words where there is no light.
The Guide is a non-player character encountered in the D6 tunnel section of the Metro 2033 video game (2010, 4A Games). He is a lone survivor who has made his home in the dark, abandoned passages of the Moscow Metro, far from the relative safety of the stations. Haggard, wary, and speaking in a low, urgent register, he serves as a brief but memorable waypoint for Artyom as the protagonist pushes deeper into the tunnel network toward the surface.

Lore & Background
In the world of Metro 2033, the tunnels beyond the lit stations are a landscape of silence, feral creatures, and the slow erosion of sanity. The Guide inhabits this in-between space: not a member of any station's militia, not a member of the Red Line or the Anarchists, simply a man who has chosen—or been forced—to live in the dark. His appearance is that of long isolation: disheveled clothing, a makeshift weapon, eyes that track movement with the reflex of someone who has not seen another human face in a long time. He speaks to Artyom not with the scripted courtesy of a station guard but with the clipped, paranoid urgency of a person who has learned that the tunnels do not forgive hesitation. His function in Artyom's journey is narrow but thematically resonant. He represents the human cost of the post-nuclear world beyond the stations' walls: people who fell out of the social order and were left to survive or die in the infrastructure of a dead city. He is neither hero nor villain, merely a thread of consciousness in a tunnel that stretches for kilometers in both directions, and his brief interaction with Artyom underscores the game's central tension between the fragile communities of the stations and the vast, indifferent darkness that surrounds them. The Guide does not appear in the major political or military arcs of the story. He is a small, human footnote in a narrative about the fate of the species, and that smallness is part of his weight. In a game where Artyom will confront mutants, ideological factions, and the question of humanity's future, the Guide is simply a man who has been alone in the dark for too long and is glad, in a wary and suspicious way, to see another pair of eyes.
In Their Own Story
The torch beam cuts a pale cone through the D6 tunnel, and for a long stretch there is nothing but the drip of water and the soft scrape of Artyom's boots on wet concrete. Then, a shape. A hand, then a face, then a whole man crouched behind a collapsed support column, a pipe held across his knees like a rifle. The Guide does not stand. He does not smile. He watches Artyom the way a rat watches a cat that has paused at the edge of its territory. "You're going the wrong way," he says. Not a question. His voice is dry, cracked, the voice of someone who has not spoken to another person in weeks. He points a thumb down the tunnel, toward a junction Artyom had not noticed. "Two hundred meters. Then the water starts. You don't wait for it. You don't stop. You just walk."
Artyom nods. The Guide watches him go, then sinks back behind the column, his eyes following the retreating torchlight until it is swallowed by the dark. He does not follow. He does not need to. The tunnel is his, and the tunnel is enough.
Reader's Guide
Name: The Guide Role: Non-player character; tunnel survivor encountered during Artyom's transit through D6. Station / Faction affiliation: None. He is unaffiliated with any station, militia, or political faction in the game. He exists independently in the tunnel infrastructure. Key relationships: His only meaningful interaction in the game is with Artyom, to whom he offers a brief directional warning. He has no named allies, family, or antagonists presented to the player. First appearance: Metro 2033 (video game, 2010, 4A Games). He is not a prominent named character in Dmitry Glukhovsky's 2002 novel of the same title. Narrative summary: The Guide is a minor but atmospherically significant NPC. Artyom encounters him crouched in the D6 tunnel, in a stretch of the metro that has been cut off from the stations and left to decay. The Guide is a survivor of the underground, living in a state of prolonged isolation. He is paranoid, physically worn, and speaks in short, urgent fragments. His sole narrative function is to warn Artyom of a hazard ahead in the tunnel and to nudge the protagonist toward the correct path. He does not join Artyom, does not appear in later sections, and does not factor into the game's major plot threads concerning the Red Line, the Anarchists, or the surface. His significance is tonal: he is a reminder that the tunnels are not merely a corridor to be traversed but a place where people have lived, suffered, and been left behind. By the time Artyom moves on, the Guide is already a memory, a voice in the dark that will not be heard again.
