Lore & Background
Sukhoi is a military officer who rescued Artyom as a baby from a horde of carnivorous rats that had killed Artyom's mother and the other inhabitants of his station. Following this, Sukhoi raised Artyom as his own son. By the time of the novel's events, Sukhoi has become one of the authorities of VDNKh (Exhibition), a station in the Moscow Metro. When a man named Hunter arrives at VDNKh looking for Sukhoi, the three meet to discuss the station's situation. VDNKh is facing increasing attacks from mysterious creatures known as 'The Dark Ones', who inspire terror throughout the station. Later in the story, after Artyom's journey to deliver a message to Polis, he stops at VDNKh on his way to Ostankino Tower. There, he finds the station has been almost overrun by Dark Ones and has a brief reunion with Sukhoi.
In Their Own Story
Sukhoi was a military officer who, after a nuclear war forced Moscow's surviving population into the Metro system, found himself at a station where a horde of carnivorous rats had killed a woman and all the other inhabitants. Only a baby, Artyom, had survived. Sukhoi saved the baby and raised him as his own son. Years later, as one of the authorities of VDNKh station, Sukhoi met with a man named Hunter and his adopted son Artyom to discuss the increasing attacks from creatures called the Dark Ones. After Artyom left on a mission to deliver a warning to Polis, Sukhoi remained at VDNKh. When Artyom later returned on his way to Ostankino Tower, he found VDNKh almost overrun by Dark Ones and shared a brief reunion with Sukhoi before continuing his journey.
